Bracken twirls smoothed against pillow,
Grandfather clock lulling her into a paradise -
Or rather tumultuous hell
As she battles to escape, her tormentor weakens
The chime resounded
The doll arose
In the paralyzing darkness
She stumbles blinding through the room,
No candle to hand; the wicks all burned
A sudden misplaced step
throws porcelain and satin to marble,
but despite chinks in her armour,
luxurious ruby abundant,
She perseveres forwards,
Elbows grinding against the unforgiving flats,
Knees brought to powder
Hands seek the house.
By the light of reflective eye,
She peers into the doll house
All amour and scarlet –
The interiors fuchsia
And leafy green, too;
Romantic union of romantic colour.
Rap-tap on mahogany door.
Naïve doll taps on miniature door
A solemn cheer; glassy tears arise
To the surface.
A shrunken figure arises gently, fatigued,
And stares back at discoloured beauty.
